National Junior Para Swimming Championships June 2017 - Sunderland

Thu 29th June 2017

Two Hoddesdon swimming club members travelled to Sunderland to compete in the National Junior Para-Swimming Championships 2017 funded by Swim England and delivered by the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) the weekend of 24th - 25th June 2017.

The event provided young disabled swimmers with more competition experience and an opportunity to win medals against national rivals.  This year’s partnership between Swim England and EFDS increased the opportunity for youth talent development. Swimmers were aged between 10-16 year olds and from all over the UK.

Louise Storey aged 10 and a pupil at Manor Fields Primary School, Bishop’s Stortford qualified for four events 100m Freestyle, 100m Breaststroke, 50m Freestyle and 100m Backstroke bringing home three bronze medals in the 50m and 100m Free and the 100m Breaststroke.

Sam Carter 10 years old and a pupil at St. Cross Catholic Primary School, Hoddesdon qualified for two events the 50m Freestyle and the 100m Backstroke and also came home with a bronze medal in his 50m Freestyle.

Janet Warrington, Disability Swimming Head Coach for Hoddesdon swimming club said:

“Louise and Sam have both done extremely well at this national event.  It was important to show ‘Swim England Para Swimming’ their skills and ability, however, I think it was more important to enjoy the event, make new friends and learn from the experience.”

“They improved their personal best times, made new friends, have grown in confidence and learned some important lessons for future events.   I am very proud of them and very excited for the future.”
